Autumn is beautiful. With vibrant fall colors, pleasant aromas, and refreshing temperatures, it creates the perfect setting for long walks with our canine companions.
However, please keep these fall safety tips in mind during this season before heading outside with your furry friend.
Keep School Supplies Out of Paws’ Reach!
Fall is back-to-school time, and for those of you with young children, this means having school supplies used often. These supplies can be very dangerous if left where your pets can access them. If ingested, they can cause blockages or gastrointestinal upset, so keep them out of reach.
Don’t Share Chocolate Or Treats With Your Pets!
Chocolate, candy, and other tasty holiday treats are not for pets. Many contain artificial sweeteners and other ingredients that are toxic to them. Ensure you don’t give these types of food to your pets and avoid leaving them within reach.
Be Cautious With Leaf Piles!
Leaf piles can be fun for your dog, but avoid letting them jump into piles that have been sitting for a while. They can harbor mold, ticks, and other irritants that can affect your pet’s health. Always check your dog for ticks thoroughly after returning from the outdoors. Stones and plant material can also get caught between toes and cause trauma.
Watch Out for Wildlife!
Wild animals are preparing for winter hibernation. If you’re walking in the woods with your dog, keep a close eye out for wildlife and maintain a safe distance to prevent injury or disease transmission. If you’re in an area where venomous snakes might be found, familiarize yourself with their types and locations to avoid encountering them with your pet.
Steer Clear of Mushrooms!
Most mushrooms popping up on forest floors are safe, but some are highly toxic to pets. Prevent your dog from ingesting them by keeping them away from areas where mushrooms grow, supervising their play, and keeping them close during off-leash walks and hikes.
Talk to your veterinarian if you have any questions to ensure you know what’s safe and what’s not.
Enjoy the health and social benefits of walking. Your pet will love it, and we’re sure you will too.
